What is Pop Art?

Lecture by Elin Merete Flannum

About the event

In this lecture on Pop Art, we dive into the diverse universe of pop art. What exactly is pop art, and is there a simple answer to that question? Art historian Elin Merete Flannum offers an introduction to what, rather than a genre, can be described as an artistic and cultural phenomenon. In the 1960s, popular culture became a major part of people’s lives, with Hollywood celebrities, various media, and advertising consumed seamlessly and in large quantities. This greatly influenced people’s lifestyles, the cultural atmosphere, and eventually the art world itself. Forms, content, and techniques began to incorporate elements from comics, film, advertising, and the entertainment industry in general. By borrowing this aesthetic, artists created a type of art that was both appealing and, in some cases, critical. We will look at selected examples of pop art from art history, as well as works from the Rasmussen Collection itself. The collection includes pieces by several prominent pop artists, such as Andy Warhol, David Hockney, and Jasper Johns. Welcome!
